IchijutenIchitjuten Exhibition Catalogue #5

$30 inc. postage

The Ichijuten was the annual exhibition organized by members of the Omiya bonsai village and featured some of the most well known trees.
The catalogues are in full colour and of a similar format to Sakafuten.
Two trees to each page and 96 trees in total.

Number 5 was held in 1983

kokufutenKokufuten Catalogue #5 - June 1936

$850     $800

One of the oldest and rarest of the Kokufuten catalogues, this dates back to the start of the exhibition and to the start of the photographic history of bonsai, giving a rare insight into the origins of modern bonsai.

This is a book for serious collectors only, and the price reflects this.  Pre war kokufuten books are very difficult to find even in Japan and there are still many Japanese collectors looking for them.

The condition is good considering the age, there is some superficial damage to the cloth on the cover but the pictures inside are in perfect condition.

gafuGafu-ten 14 - Shohin Exhibition

$60

Issue 14 of the most famous and high quality shohin exhibition of the calendar year.
Held every January in Kyoto, the Gafu-ten is the highlight of the Shohin Bonsai world, here you will see only the finest trees on display.

Over 170 displays are featured in this catalogue from 1989.  Very good condition.

shohinShohin Bonsai Shashin Shu

$ 55

A Bonsai Sekai publication, this is a purely photographic book which contains over 60 full colour pictures and 30 b/w plates. Published in 1972 it shows a slightly different side to Shohin bonsai.

Like all bonsai of the time, the focus is more towards the pot in which the tree is planted and there is a small section on pots inside.

This would appeal to the classic collector of shohin bonsai, someone who appreciates the beauty of thin, graceful yet well aged trees and pots

wabiWabi - Auction Magazine various issues

$20

Various issues of the well known auction magazine WABI, created by the owner of the famous Ginza Morimae shop in central Tokyo.  It features hundreds of the finest quality trees, pots, suiseki and stands.

The idea behind the magazine was that it was a giant mail order catalogue so that Bonsai enthusiasts all over the country could access materials that they would not normally have access to.

Sadly it is no longer in publication but I have several of the back issues available.
