Kokufuten Catalogue #5 - June 1936
$850
One
of the oldest and rarest of the Kokufuten catalogues, this dates back
to the start of the exhibition and to the start of the
photographic history of bonsai, giving a rare insight into the
origins
of modern bonsai. It is interesting to see the way in which the
Bonsai aesthetic has changed in a relatively short time period.
Looking at these pictures throws doubt on what many modern
"experts" claim about the origins of Bonsai display and how traditional
the art art is. What is certain is that the pots used in the
early Kokufuten exhibitions are of the finest quality, and many of the
pots used then are still being used today at the highest level.
This is a book for serious collectors only, and the price reflects this. Pre war kokufuten books are very difficult to find even in Japan and there are still many Japanese collectors looking for them. To find one in as good a condition as this was a great find. It is relatively easy to find copies of the post boom catalogues, from 45 onwards, but anything pre-40 is very hard to find.
The condition is very good considering the age, there is some superficial damage to the cloth on the cover but the pictures inside are in perfect condition.
I am constantly searching for early Kokufuten catalogues, and they do come up every now and again at auctions in Japan. If you have any specific requests then please let me know. I have had copies of number 1, 3, 6 and 16 in the past and I am certain that I can find any issue for you given time.
Price includes shipping by EMS and insurance.
