Shimantogawa Ishi

$250

24 x 6 x 11 cm

A subdued and refined stone with an interesting texture collected from the famous Shimantogawa river.  Located in the western Shikoku mountains, Shimantogawa is known as Japan's last clear and pristine river. Untouched by modern life the way of life on the river remains the same as it did hundreds of years ago.

The continuously flowing water of the shimantogawa river has created this particular stone which should be appreciated for it's fantastic texture and colouring as well as for its subtle shaping.  Resembling a mountain range seen from a long distance there are no features which immediately grab the viewers attention, rather a distinctive varying texture which undulates with character and depth, drawing the eye in to the stone as a whole.

As would befit a flat bottomed stone of this nature it is seated in a shallow daiza, expertly hand carved from rosewood.  Ideally this suiseki should be used in a display with a larger kusamono style bonsai, giving an image of distant mountains covered in summer flowers.
